Welcome to Spencer Bro's Feed! Austin and Colby grew up on the Sorensen Livestock Cattle Ranch. Raising animals for the 4-H Livestock Show, chasing cows, changing sprinklers, and feeding whatever critters were in the backyard was just a part of life.

 

But, like most of our customers today- the real "gateway drug" to a successful hobby farm/operation.. is chickens. At age 12 Austin and Grandpa Spencer order 100 baby chicks online and got to work building a chicken coop. A short year later they order another 100 and built another chicken coop. The cycle continued until they had incubators running in the garage and were hatching chicks for all of the feed stores in the county and 20 different breeds in cycle.

The struggle now was- Where do I get feed? There has to be a better option than the countless number 50 LB bags. Grandpa had a friend with a grain grinder from the 1930s and the neighbor had a backyard cement mixer, and we had our start. The first batch of feed wasn't your ordinary feed and inlcuded bones from the family butcher shop for for calcium (thrown threw the ancient grinder with a bang), wheat from the old man's food storage down the road, and who knows what else. But the hens were laying and we were excited!

As time went on we fine tuned our recipe and the feed became a hot topic around town. The neighbors wanted their cement mixer back, so dad picked up an old rusty 1954 PTO drive feed mixer. This was big time! Grandpa Sorenson even had a 1940s International tractor that "Ran when it was parked there" to run it. And sure enough, we were in business.
